MI Helicopters has an excellent reputation in Queensland for supporting such government agencies with Fire Fighting operations:
- Queensland Emergency Services
- Queensland Parks & Wildlife Services
MI Helicopters uses the Aerial Drip Torch method, which has proved to be more effective, efficient and safer than ground lighting.
The gel in the drip torch is a mixture of "Firetrol Firegel" powder and unleaded petrol. During the flight the gel pump, igniters and flow rate are controlled from the cabin of the helicopter.
Burning gel falls to the ground, wraps around its target and ignites the vegetation, resulting in a clean, efficient and effective burn. A full, 80- litre tank can burn thousands of acres of pulled country or light a 50km line on a controlled burn.
The Aerial Drip Torch method has many safety advantages over other incendiary devices that are carried externally.
One of the most obvious is the ability to carry an observer who is familiar with the environment. This takes the reliance away from the pilot, needing to workout boundaries.
Another safety advantage over lighting from the ground is that it can be observed and mapped
(GPS/moving map) from the air. If the fire jumps a firebreak the ground crew can be quickly
directed to the affected area.
MI Helicopters offers a range of helicopters to suit all environments with knowledgeable/experienced pilots who have flown hundreds of hours in hazard reduction management.
